EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY

1 Anon. The King Collection, 1855-60.

(1) (Portrait of Mrs John King). Daguerreotype, gilding, colour dyes, oval mount 9.3 x 7cm; leather case. Minor foxing, wear to case, damage to spine.

(2) (Portrait of Mrs John King and Philip). Albumen paper print, carte-de-visite, ‘T. Hart F.S.A., 10 Flora Place, Plymouth’ printed on card below, photographer’s printed emblem verso, and inscribed verso in pencil Beneath this was written in my uncle’s book ‘Mrs John King & Philip’. I think it must have been copied in Plymouth.

(3) Cameo brooch, depicting four horses being led by an angel on a cloud, as worn by Mrs King in both the daguerreotype and the carte-de-visite; 5.5cm diameter.

The Collection $2,900

Mary Ann, daughter of Dr. Peck of Newmarket, England, married John King on 20th January 1853 at Rosedale, Gipps Land. Her son, Philip Gidley, of Boisdale, Gipps Land, was born on 9th December 1853, and her two daughters later. She died c.1860. John King was the son of Admiral Philip Parker King and grandson of Philip Gidley King, the third governor of New South Wales 1800-1806.

Printed title on presentation mount reads Sydney University Hall, in commemoration of the Grand Festival at the opening of the Sydney University, the 18th of July, 1859. Photographed by W. Blackwood, 16, Bridge-street..

Showing one single figure on a rock, looking across to the hills.

 

7 Richard Daintree. Deserted Diggings, Spring Creek, Near Daylesford, late 1850s. Albumen paper, 16.8 x 23.1cm. $1,250

Deserted areas such as this were common as areas of alluvial gold mining were abandoned. Reproduced: Sun Pictures of Victoria, pl. 31.

11 Robert MacPherson (England, 1811-1872). (Trevi Fountain, Rome), c.1850s. Albumen paper, stamped below on backing sheet ‘MacPherson Rome 4’, 41.4 x 31.6cm. $850

Well known for his architectural studies of Rome during 1850s-60s.
